WordPress Plugin Review: Wordfence Security

wordfence-security

Wordfence Security is a plugin designed to protect your WordPress site from hackers and malware attacks.  NYLI has been using the free version of the plugin since we redesigned our website approximately 4 months ago.

Some of the key features of Wordfence Security that we find useful include:

  1. Protected Admin Login.  With some minor configuration, you can setup email alerts letting you know any time someone has logged into (or attempted to log in) to your WordPress site.  In addition you can setup security measures to lock out users after failing to enter the correct password.
  2. Integrated Caching.  Wordfence Security includes a few caching options to improve your website’s performance.  If you aren’t familiar with PHP caching, it basically keeps a ‘copy’ of recently accessed pages of your site, without having to use processing power to re-run database queries to load content.
  3. Email Notifications. WordPress core, plugins, and themes are constantly receiving updates and it can be difficult keeping up to date.  Wordfence Security will alert you when a newer version of a plugin or theme comes out, so you can make sure you are always using the latest version.

For a full list of features, visit the Wordfence Plugin page here.

Overall, we have been very pleased with the security features of Wordfence.  The added peace of mind knowing you are protected from SQL injection and hack attempts lets you focus on other aspects of your website (like remembering to update your blog more frequently).
